When speaking about performance advantages for single-threaded apps
running under NT on a multi-CPU machine, I think it's important to
remember that kernel and service induced CPU load is not negligible in
most NT installations. The NT kernel itself is multi-threaded and typical
NT installations run multiple services. I believe that being able to
distribute kernel and service load among 2 or more processors is a
significant performance advantage over the single processor machine. One
instance of ScreamerNet on our dual P90 is about 10% faster than one
instance of ScreamerNet on the same machine with the single processor HAL
running and one processor installed. The more you load up the OS with
things to do, the bigger the difference becomes.
